In the words of Veruca Salt (you know, the spoiled, bratty girl from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory), “I want the world!” Indulge me while I dream about the top 5 places I’d love to visit “right now!”
You’ll have a good chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis in the Finnish Lapland from September through April. December-February are ideal (also chilly and dark). Nonetheless, here is where I want to sleep under the northern lights.
Emerging from a dark and brutal past, Cambodia has a rapidly developing tourism industry. Siem Reap is a revitalized coastal resort town with adventure, artisans, food and it is the gateway to the temples of Angkor.
From Lima, fly to Cusco but start your high-altitude experience in the Sacred Valley. It’s a bit lower in elevation so acclimatizing will be easier here. Then, head up to Machu Picchu before returning to Cusco for a couple of days. The second part of the journey is the Peruvian Amazon—amazing for adventurers and wildlife enthusiasts.
A couple summers ago, we flew to Johannesburg on our way to Botswana and Namibia. I’d return to the latter places in a heartbeat but I’d like to explore South Africa a bit more, too. I’d make it easy with a safari in the game reserves around Kruger National Park and visit Cape Town and the Garden Route.
My daughter has been dreaming of visiting Greece since she got hooked on the Percy Jackson book series a few years ago. I’d be happy to oblige her love of mythology for a few days but I’m looking forward to some island time.
